What George Clooney did before becoming an actor

Have you ever wondered what sort of jobs famous Hollywood actors had before they made it?

George Clooney was quite a favourite choice in the office because we could relate to him…other than the famous part obviously.

The silver fox was actually following his father’s footsteps and was working as a journalist.

After finishing high school, Clooney enrolled in Northern Kentucky University, where he majored in broadcast journalism.

Other than aspiring to follow in his father’s footsteps, Clooney would also discuss world events at family dinners and as a child following his dad around the newsroom before getting into social activism.

Clooney, however, got tired of being constantly compared to his father and was also unsure of whether he would be a decent journalist.

So he quit school and had to figure out what to do from there.

He went on to try out for professional baseball for the Cincinnati Red team but he was not skilled enough.

Clooney did a few odd jobs here and there before finally falling into acting when he was cast as an extra on his cousin and uncle’s film.

From there, Clooney was intrigued and even moved to California to become an actor.

And now look at him today. A Hollywood heartthrob.

Image: Shutterstock

You’ll never believe the extreme cost of Duchess Meghan’s New York baby shower

Duchess Meghan arrived in New York City to see her friends and celebrate that her first child with husband Prince Harry is due soon with a star-studded $300,000 (NZD$ 437,445) baby shower

With 15 of her closest friends around her, the Duchess was sure to have enjoyed herself, especially considering her co-hosts Amal Clooney (George Clooney's wife) and Serena Williams were picking up the bill.

The baby shower was held at the Mark Hotel, where guests stayed in the $75,000-a-night (NZD$ 109,361) Grand Penthouse Suite. This astonishing cost makes it the most expensive hotel room in the USA.

The cost of Duchess Meghan’s baby shower is an extremely high number, coming in at a staggering $300,000 (NZD$ 437,445). Here is how much everything cost:

The Mark Hotel Grand Penthouse Suite: US$150,000 (NZD$ 218,722)

Five nights in a one-bedroom suite at the Mark Hotel: US$9,982.05 (NZD$ 14,555)

Dinner for five at the Polo Bar: US$420 (NZD$ 612)

Two Royal Protection officers: US$86,316 (NZD$ 125,861)

Flights from London to NYC: US$26,202 (NZD$ 38,206)

17 Away carry-on suitcases: US$3,825 (NZD$ 5,577)

Harpist: US$625 (NZD$ 909)

Roses: US$400 (NZD$ 583)

Lunch: US$78 approx. (NZD$ 113)

Afternoon tea: US$25 approx. (NZD$ 26)

Mandarin tree: US$140 approx. (NZD$ 204)

Trek bicycle: US$609.99 approx. (NZD$ 888)

Cotton candy machine: US$199.99 (NZD$ 290)

Total cost: US$279.201.98 (NZD$ 407,116)

Along with human rights lawyer Amal Clooney and tennis legend Serena Williams, the star-studded event was attended designer Misha Nonoo, stylist Jessica Mulroney, former Suits co-star Abigail Spencer, Oprah Winfrey's best friend and TV anchor Gayle King, and makeup artist Daniel Martin.

However, many are interested in whether or not the baby shower breaks royal protocol. Royal correspondent and commentator James Brookes told the ABC that the reporting around whether or not Duchess Meghan breaks royal protocol is unfounded.

"There's been a lot of talk, particularly in digital versions of the British press, of her breaking so-called 'protocol'," he said.

"A lot of it is rubbish. The 'shutting her own car door' is a good example – many times, the Royals have someone there to open their car door for them and they're straight out and into greeting people, but if there's nobody there to shut it and it's in the way, they'll close it themselves," he explained.

"Remember, they are human, after all. Meghan's putting her own stamp on her Royal role.”

Scroll through the gallery to see the star studded baby shower.

Do you think the baby shower breaks royal protocol? Amal Clooney's emotional tribute to husband George

Amal Clooney has given a rare romantic toast to her husband Hollywood star George Clooney as he was honoured with an American Film Industry (AFI) Life Achievement Award earlier this week.

Amal admitted she was nervous stepping into the spotlight but wanted to pay tribute to her husband.

"It's somehow easier for me to address a court on behalf of a detainee than to speak publicly, as I'm doing for the first time tonight for my husband," the international human rights lawyer said from the stage.

The barrister, 40, then shared some never-before-revealed details of their romance.

"I met George when I was 35 and starting to become quite resigned to the idea that I was going to be a spinster," she said. "Then we met, started hiding out in my London flat and very soon it felt like no matter what happened I would never want to be with anyone else. I couldn't sleep when we were apart, and I'm told I would display a particular grin and head tilt when reading his text messages or the letters that he would hide in my bag.

"Five years later, none of that has changed," she continued. "He is the person who has my complete admiration, and also the person whose smile makes me melt every time. My love, what I have found with you is the great love that I always hoped existed. And seeing you with our children, Ella and Alexander, is the greatest joy in my life. You fill our home with laughter and happiness and that's even before the children have worked out that 'Dada' is actually Batman."

She also spoke about her husband’s generosity, his fight for justice, and his witty sense of humour.

“Although George’s modesty attributes much of the success we are celebrating here tonight to luck, I think it’s incredible talent and character that got him here and these attributes also make him an amazing husband and father,” she said.

George, who visibly teared up during Amal's speech, also gave a heartwarming speech when he took to the stage to accept his AFI award from past winner Shirley MacLaine.

"So yesterday, my two children turned one year old," the Oscar-winner said, adding: "I thought if you had a successful career that you weren't really going to be able to have one great love in your life. And then Amal walked in.

"And now we've got these two knuckleheads," Clooney continued. "And every day they make me feel small. And Amal...you make every single day, every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, as special as today."

Did George Clooney just announce his retirement?

He’s one of the most talented (and handsomest) men in Hollywood, but in a new interview, George Clooney has revealed his acting career may be coming to an end.

Chatting to The Sunday Times, the father-of-two and director of upcoming film Suburbicon confessed he no longer sees himself as a leading man.

“I acted for a long time and, you know, I’m 56,” he said. “I’m not the guy that gets the girl anymore. At least, I shouldn’t be the guy that gets the girl.”

Clooney, who has 5-month-old twins with human rights lawyer Amal, added that he no longer holds the same passion for the film industry, nor does he need the money.

“Acting used to be how I paid the rent, but I sold a tequila company for a billion dollars. I don’t need money. I have money. So I can fight to make movies I want to make.

“If you look at what I’ve been in over the past 15 years, for the most part they weren’t going to get made if I didn’t do them. Nobody was going to make Good Night, and Good Luck, Michael Clayton or Up in the Air, and I fought to get those out there.”

But that doesn’t mean the star isn’t busy. After all, he has the little ones, Ella and Alexander, to keep him occupied.

“Right now my job is changing diapers and walking them around a little bit,” he told AP.

“I really didn’t think at 56 that I would be the parent of twins. Don’t make plans. You always have to just enjoy the ride.”

George Clooney twins make TV debut

It’s been four months since George and Amal Clooney welcomed their genetically-blessed twins into the world, and everyone is still dying to get their first glimpse. Well, now they have – sort of.

Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live to chat about life as a new dad, George asked the audience if they’d like to see his bubs, who he said were backstage. Of course, everyone said yes!

But the “twins” actually turned out to be Matt Damon, who has been embroiled in a hilarious, long-lasting feud with Kimmel, pushing an empty double pram and carrying a nappy bag and toys.

“I’m his manny. It’s a nanny who’s a man,” Matt said, to which Jimmy joked, “You’re not a man!”

“That’s not what your wife said,” Matt retorted.

“So based on your physique I guess you’re breast feeding the children too?” Jimmy clapped back.

“No, no, I actually just wanted them to get their nap, so I brought them to a place where they wouldn’t be woken up by laughter,” Matt cheekily replied.

See the hilarious exchange for yourself here:

When the focus was finally back on George, the star got candid about how he’s coping with first-time fatherhood, admitting he was afraid of “breaking” the twins because “they’re so small”.

“I changed diapers until yesterday. I was good at it,” he told Jimmy. “I flipped them over, I don’t care. It’s like cleaning up your dog’s poop. It’s not that big a deal. Then we introduced the children to solid food on Friday and how that goes in as a carrot and how it comes out the way it comes out is shocking.”

George Clooney reveals wife Amal was sexually harassed

George Clooney is the latest Hollywood star to speak out about sexual harassment in the wake of allegations against Harvey Weinstein, revealing in a new interview that his own wife, human rights lawyer Amal, has experienced it in her line of work.

“My wife is a very smart, very together, very accomplished human rights lawyer and she said, ‘There have been times in my life, in the law community, [that] I had to tell someone to knock it off,’ so it happens everywhere,” the 56-year-old told Extra.

The Money Monster star added that he hopes the growing number of accusations of sexual harassment and assault will change the culture of Hollywood heavyweights abusing their positions of power.

“This wasn’t just guys hitting on girls, this is assault,” he said. “If we don’t address this and really go after Harvey, it will come back. There has to be some good that comes out of all of this and the good is going to have to be that women feel safe to speak up, that they are believed and hopefully be enough that it scares any man who would behave like that from doing it.”

In another interview with Variety, Clooney slammed director Woody Allen (who has long been the subject of sexual assault allegations himself) for defending Weinstein and urging against a “witch hunt”.

“That’s a stupid thing to say,” Clooney fumed. “The reality is, it’s not a witch hunt to these women who are trapped in a hotel room and told they’re going to get a part and, suddenly, here comes Harvey Weinstein in his birthday suit. That’s not a witch hunt; that’s an assault."

Why George Clooney is furious with Donald Trump

George Clooney has slammed US President Donald Trump's criticism of Hollywood stars as "liberal elites", lambasting the claim as "ridiculous" coming from a real estate magnate born into wealth.

"Here's the thing: I grew up in Kentucky. I sold insurance door-to-door. I sold ladies' shoes. I worked at an all-night liquor store. I would buy suits that were too big and too long and cut the bottom of the pants off to make ties so I'd have a tie to go on job interviews," the actor told the Daily Beast.

“The idea that I'm somehow the 'Hollywood elite' and this guy who takes a shit in a gold toilet is somehow the man of the people is laughable," he said.

Clooney, who is currently promoting his new film Suburbicon, says the liberals who Trump regularly criticises as “coastal elites” largely come from America's Midwest heartland and moved to Hollywood for their careers.

"I laugh when I see him say 'Hollywood elite'," the 56-year-old said. "Hollywood elite? I don't have a star on Hollywood Boulevard. Donald Trump has a star on Hollywood Boulevard! F--- you!"

He also levelled criticisms at Hillary Clinton, who he had officially endorsed during the presidential election.

"She was more qualified than even her husband was when he was elected president, but she's not as good as communicating things ... When she got up and gave a speech, it didn't soar," Clooney said.

"It was frustrating because I never saw her lift her game. I never saw it ... I think that she wasn't particularly good at articulating the things that she wanted to do."
